The North of Skye and the Trotternish Ridge has some of the most spectacular scenery on the island, which has been the backdrop to many a Hollywood blockbuster over the years. Enjoy the dramatic land-forms that naturally occur around Fladda Chuain including mountain ridges, sea cliffs, stacks, sea caves, and waterfalls.

Loch Sneosdal is a peaceful and mystical inland loch within easy walking distance of Fladda Chuain (30 minutes, walking boots essential!) Take a picnic and sit in the tranquil surroundings, where you might glimpse Golden Eagles soaring in the sky above. This is a special place and we are so lucky to have it on our doorstep.

Camus Mor is a nearby slipway and rocky beach located approximately 2 miles from Fladda Chuain. A nice place to visit by foot (40 minutes) or by car (5 minutes).

SKYE MUSEUM

Step back in time to an old Highland village… The museum offers visitors a unique experience and a true insight into island life a 100 years ago. This award winning attraction is a must for all visitors. Only 1 mile from Fladda Chuain, either a 5 minute car journey or a pleasant 20 minute walk along the quiet village road.

 

DIRECTIONS

RUBHA HUNISH

Beautiful Rubha Hunish, the most northerly point on Skye, is a magical place with spectacular panoramic views across the minch to the Outer Isles. Here you can watch out for whales, dolphins and seabirds from the sanctuary of the former Coastguard Lookout (Now maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association). 10 minute drive from Fladda Chuain.

 

DIRECTIONS

DUNTULM CASTLE

Only 10 minute drive from Fladda Chuain, Duntulm Castle was originally built in the 14th and 15th centuries and home to the Macdonald's of Sleat until 1732. The Castle has a rich history in a beautiful setting with amazing view looking across to the Outer Hebrides.

 

DIRECTIONS

The world famous Quiraing has been the backdrop for many Hollywood movie including, Stardust, Snow White and the Huntsman, 47 Ronin, Macbeth, The BFG, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and Transformers: The Last Knight. A must visit location while in Skye and only a short drive from Fladda Chuain.

 

THE QUIRAING

DIRECTIONS

This is probably the most famous walk on the Island and definitely the busiest. The ‘Old Man’ is a large pinnacle of rock that stands high and can be seen for miles around. As part of the Trotternish ridge the Storr was created by a massive ancient landside, leaving one of the most photographed landscapes in the world.

THE STORR

The towering basalt columns that make up the cliff, which are said to resemble the pleats on traditional Scottish plaid, Kilt Rock is a breathtaking site. From atop these vertical cliffs your eye follows the thundering waterfall as it plunges down into the sea below.

STAFFIN BEACH

Staffin Beach is a small beach, with sand at one end and exposed sedimentary rock. The beach is called An Corran and not far from the ramp down to the beach you will find the dinosaur footprints. A great spot to bring a picnic on a beautiful sunny day to explore or find a sheltered spot to enjoy the ocean breeze close up.

On the West side of Trotternish at Balnacnoc (which means - the village or township in the hills) above Uig, is the Fairy Glen – a Quirang-like landslip in miniature. The road winds around small round-topped grassy hills with lochans (ponds) in between which gives the glen an otherworldly feel.

STAFFIN MUSEUM

Staffin Museum contains excellent collections of local geological and fossil specimens, as well as representative artefacts illustrating the prehistory and social history of the Trotternish area.

KILVAXTER SOUTERRAIN

Kilvaxter Souterrain is an underground stone-lined tunnel typically associated with Iron Age settlements along the Atlantic fringe. Over 500 have been found in Scotland, of which around 20 are on Skye. Another 5 minute car journey from Fladda Chuain.

Fladda Chuain is a traditional cottage tastefully refurbished in 2017. The cottage is set in a rural crofting community in stunning North Skye. Fladda Chuain is named after a nearby small island and is our former family home. It is tastefully decorated and furnished with your comfort in mind. It sleeps up to 6 with 3 generous double bedrooms. There are private enclosed gardens with stunning panoramic views across the inner Minch towards the Outer Hebridean islands of Uist, Harris and Lewis. If you also plan to visit these islands, Fladda Chuain will be your perfect base being only 15 minutes from the Uig ferry. There is ample safe parking for 2 or more cars (please note a car is essential). The cottage is warm, cosy and well equipped throughout. The perfect base to explore the rugged and beautiful Trotternish Peninsula, arguably the most spectacular part of the Isle of Skye.
